A former president and treasurer of the Frederick Youth Sports Association admitted to taking funds from the league for personal use, the league’s board of directors said in a statement Monday.
Kathy Carey of Frederick was asked to resign from the board in December after members expressed concerns about the organization’s finances, according to the statement. A subsequent audit found about $31,000 missing, and the group filed a complaint with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office last month.
Detective Marty Rowe of the Criminal Investigations Unit is handling the case. He could not be reached for comment Monday. According to Maryland court records, no charges have been filed against Carey.
FYSA is a feeder program for Tuscarora High School football and cheerleading. The league serves more than 200 children ages 4 through 14, according to president Ted Markward. Carey had been involved with the organization for 17 years, the past two and a half as treasurer.
Carey’s husband, Shawn Carey, resigned his position as head coach of the Tuscarora High School football team in December, citing the desire to spend more time with family.
